What is Bedrock Launcher?

Bedrock Launcher is a free, open-source (GPL-3.0) launcher for Minecraft Bedrock on Windows. It works like the Java Edition launcher: you can install several Bedrock versions side by side — releases, betas and previews — and switch between them without uninstalling anything. It is an unofficial tool, not made by Mojang or Microsoft.

Important: which Minecraft versions it can install

From version 1.21.120 (late 2025), Minecraft for Windows moved to a new package format (GDK). The current Bedrock Launcher release came out before that change, so it installs the older versions, up to 1.21.11x. Its developers are working on GDK support, but it has not been released yet.

For 1.21.120 and newer, use MCLauncher (version 0.7.0, June 2026), another open-source version switcher that supports GDK versions. Its own developer calls GDK support "quite flaky", so expect some trial and error.

What you need

• Windows 10 (build 14393 or later) or Windows 11.
• A Microsoft account that owns Minecraft for Windows, or an active Game Pass subscription. The launcher does not unlock the game.
• Developer Mode turned on — without it the launcher does not start.
• The .NET 8 Desktop Runtime and the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (x64).

How to install Bedrock Launcher

1. Back up your worlds. Copy the com.mojang folder from %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games to your Desktop.
2. If Minecraft is already installed from the Microsoft Store, the Xbox app or the Minecraft Launcher, uninstall it in Settings → Apps. The launcher cannot install over it.
3. Turn on Developer Mode: Settings → Privacy & security (Windows 11) or Update & Security (Windows 10) → For developers → Developer Mode.
4. Download the ZIP with the button at the top of this page and extract it to a folder with a short path, for example C:\BedrockLauncher.
5. Run BedrockLauncher.exe, pick a version, click Install, then Play.

Updating from an older Bedrock Launcher: extract the new ZIP, then copy the data folder from your old launcher folder into the new one. Your settings and installations come with it.

Don't own Minecraft on your Microsoft account?

Is Bedrock Launcher safe?

The file on this page is the official release from the project's GitHub, unchanged — its SHA-256 matches the one GitHub lists, and the developers publish a VirusTotal scan with each release. Windows SmartScreen may still warn because the launcher is not signed; choose More info → Run anyway.

Is Bedrock Launcher free?

Developer Mode must be on, and the .NET 8 Desktop Runtime and Visual C++ Redistributable must be installed. The launcher writes the reason to a log file in its data/logs folder.
