Minecraft for Switch 2 and the Minecoin Change: What Happens on October 27

Published 9 Oct 2026

Short answer: On October 27, 2026 Minecraft comes to Nintendo Switch 2, with Vibrant Visuals on by default. On the same day, Minecoins split: coins bought on a Nintendo console only work on Nintendo, and coins bought on a phone, PC or Xbox no longer work on Nintendo. Minecoins you already own before that day keep working everywhere.

Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2

Mojang confirmed the date again at Minecraft Live: Minecraft for Nintendo Switch 2 comes out on October 27, 2026. What is new compared with the Switch 1 version:

  • Vibrant Visuals by default: Minecraft's built-in graphics mode with better lighting, shadows and fog. It is the same mode Minecraft PE has on supported phones. It doesn't work in split-screen or with some Marketplace worlds.
  • An updated Super Mario Mash-Up pack, the Mario-themed world and skins that only Nintendo versions have, remade for Vibrant Visuals.
  • An upgrade for Switch 1 owners. Mojang says there will be a digital upgrade path, but hasn't said yet what it costs.

It is still Bedrock Edition, so you can play with friends on Minecraft PE, Windows, Xbox and PlayStation as before.

The Minecoin change on October 27

Minecoins are the money for the Minecraft Marketplace. Until now one balance worked on every Bedrock device. From October 27, 2026:

  • Coins bought on Nintendo (Switch or Switch 2) can only be spent on Nintendo. They go into a separate Nintendo Wallet.
  • Coins bought anywhere else, such as on Android, iPhone, Windows or Xbox, can't be spent on Nintendo any more.
  • Coins you already have don't change. Everything you own before October 27 moves to a Legacy Wallet that still works on all devices and never expires. The game spends the Legacy Wallet first.
  • Minecoin gift cards: newer cards may not work on Nintendo. Check the platforms printed on the card before you buy it.

What it means if you play Minecraft PE

  • Only play on your phone? Nothing changes for you.
  • Play on a phone and a Switch? Coins you buy on your phone after October 27 work on your phone, PC, Xbox and PlayStation, but not on the Switch. If you mostly shop on the Switch, buy the coins on the Switch.
  • Have coins saved up? They stay usable everywhere, because they move to the Legacy Wallet. The new rules only apply to coins bought on or after October 27.
  • Things you already bought, like skin packs and worlds: Mojang's announcement is only about Minecoins and doesn't mention them.
